Building Confidence Through Experience: Our Residential Trip to Keswick

At Future Pathways, we believe that some of the most powerful learning happens outside of the classroom. Recently, a group of our young people took part in a three-day residential trip to Newlands Adventure Centre in Keswick, an experience that offered far more than just time away.

For many of the young people involved, this trip was an opportunity to step into something new. Away from familiar routines, they were able to experience a different environment, take on fresh challenges and discover strengths they may not have realised they had.
Over the three days, the group took part in a wide range of outdoor activities, including rock climbing, canoeing, high ropes, archery and fire building. Each activity presented its own challenge, encouraging young people to try something new, push beyond their comfort zones and support one another along the way.
What made this experience so valuable was not just the activities themselves, but the impact they had. Moments of uncertainty turned into moments of achievement. Young people who may have been hesitant at the start of an activity began to grow in confidence as they realised what they were capable of.
These experiences help to build self-belief in a way that is often difficult to replicate in more traditional settings.
The residential also provided an important opportunity for young people to develop relationships. Spending time together in a new environment encouraged teamwork, communication and mutual support. These shared experiences help to strengthen connections, not only between young people but also with staff, building trust and a sense of belonging.
Trips like this play a key role in supporting wider development. They help young people build resilience, improve confidence and develop social skills, all of which support their ability to re-engage with learning and move forward positively. For some, this may be the first time they have experienced success in this way, and that feeling can be incredibly powerful.
At Future Pathways, we recognise that every young person’s journey is different. Providing opportunities like this allows us to support development in a way that feels meaningful, engaging and accessible. These experiences help young people see themselves differently, not defined by past challenges, but by their potential.
We are incredibly proud of every young person who took part in the trip and the way they approached each challenge with courage and determination.
We would also like to thank Darlington Borough Council for their support in helping make this opportunity possible.
Experiences like this are a reminder that when young people are given the right environment, encouragement and opportunity, they can achieve far more than they may believe.
